Stories from the world of Urban Play

Jakob! It’s amazing that we are working at the ~exact~ same intersection of strategic foresight, design thinking, experience design, and play. Like, woah. Spot on. I’m based in Rotterdam, NL and would love to chat further with you about your work, and perhaps even a collab! Write me here or via email is also great: lilybhiggins@gmail.com
Looking forward to connecting with you

Just watched McGonigal talk on your recommendation, what an interesting take thanks! Jane McGonigal: Gaming can make a better world | TED Talk

“… a problem that a lot of gamers have. We feel that we are not as good in reality as we are in games. I don’t mean just good as in successful, although that’s part of it. We do achieve more in game worlds. But I also mean good as in motivated to do something that matters – inspired to collaborate and to cooperate… And in real life, when we face failure, when we confront obstacles, we often don’t feel that way. We feel overcome, we feel overwhelmed, we feel anxious, maybe depressed, frustrated or cynical. We never have those feelings when we’re playing games, they just don’t exist in games. So that’s what I wanted to study… What about games makes it impossible to feel that we can’t achieve everything? How can we take those feelings from games and apply them to real-world work?”

Hello!
I’m wondering about the emails with the timeline) I haven’t seen one) maybe I missed it?

Hi Anna,

you haven’t missed it, in some cases it might take a bit longer to get a reply.
However, do not worry, we have received your application through email and you will get an email very soon.

Hi Olesya! Greetings from Piter  I am sure such activities that you describe (public gardens, …) are present in Russia as well - as far as I’m concerned people are not always asking for permission  or are trying to cooperate with those local governments that want to cooperate. In Piter such activities were made by QULLAB (former Arts4City), Street Art Institute and others, in Moscow I would check Strelka or Partizaning (Igor Ponosov) works. And many many others for sure. If talking about russian games - try Encounter or Dozor (if you haven’t yet) - i think those games are russian heritage

Hi Ksenia, Greetings from Piter!
Your idea sounds super interesting for me - we tried to do something similar last year for the exhibition SPB 2103, however much more simple that you describe. Thanks also for the link to book - I wil surely have a look at this.

This festival seems crazy ! I totally dig their vibes.

I agree with you on the goal to mixed good business and good art, but I think it require a lot of creativity business wise ! I love it too when it happened though, and also I find that it’s often when you’re true to yourself in business that you can do the greatest thing. For example it took me a long time to learn to say no to project or contract, and I’m still learning to do so, but I think this is a good skill both business wise and creative wise.

To answer your question, I’ve done a lot of experimentation with VR, live motion capture, and optical illusion for example. To mix VR and theatre is a really great mix and I hope I will be able to explore that a bit more !

Hi to s.Piter!! Do you have a link to your project? I would like to see it!

Hello Ballon!

Phygital: Physical environment enhanced with digital projection attributes . The difference between phygital and augmented reality environments usually regards the means of projection used so that a user may interact on the spot with the different elements of a natural sight.

An example may be given through the following description: a player of a medieval LARP, may use the high-end device provided by the company, in order to be able to see and interact on a battle set being digitally projected on the natural background. Thus, he/she are experiencing the attributes of an online game in a natural scenery. The term was introduced by Mr. Mario Chatzidamianos Social and Solidarity Economy Knowledge Broker in 2012, and ever since is gaining more support when in need to describe the disruption market available between physical-augmented and virtual environments.

So interesting to hear about the contemporary Στοές. Google translates this as ‘stoa’, which I understand! as a classical architectural term for a long space open on one side with columns.

But you have now introduced to me a whole new contemporary meaning for it. If I’ve understood correctly…?

Call for Speculative Designers!

There are so many amazing, brilliant people in this thread, that I thought I would post another opportunity here, for those interested:

I work with a Strategic Foresight studio in Amsterdam called Changeist, and we are searching for speculative designers based in the UK for a paid assignment. The project is about the future of community response in emergencies, in collaboration with UK-based org Nesta. Deadline is June 10! Read more about the project here, and I hope to see some applications coming in from this community.

Feel free to pass along this link if you know someone else who might fill the bill. We especially encourage those from diverse backgrounds and smaller/rural areas within the UK to apply.

Sounds like a great plan. I’m in!

Hi. Lilly,

Sadly I have just seen this notice and it is already June 14. Can I please double check if this definitely closed on June 10?

Would love to to but I’ll be taking part in the Experience Design Hackathon. In fact, you guys should totally come by on Sunday (June 30th). We’ll be showcasing our experiences on that day! It’s free

Guys, how about we create s separate sub-forum on the platform for the Berlin community, to announce the news and organize ourselves and not to have to scroll through this monster thread?

Hi Anne, thank you for your interest!
For me slow games and rituals are games and playful experiences, where the focus lies on awareness, taking your time, reflect, experiment, explore etc., mostly in urban environments or outdoors. This can range from audio-walks to social interventions, from small groups to single player experiences. Storytelling and exploration is an important element in this, because for me it creates a sense of curiosity and wonder. I love to discover new things in our everyday life, offering a new perspective and perceptions.
By becoming immersed in an alterative reality, I have the opportunity to observe myself, to perceive myself in that other reality and to see what it does to me and how I feel about it.
I can decide how much and what (maybe new insights or take on things) I may take back into my reality.
